<image:title>Blog - School Meal Debt in England - From the 44 schools who provided figures across three council areas, we calculated that at least 23.1% of pupils, not eligible for FSM, are in debt. From the 47 schools who told us of the value of their debt, there was an average debt of £1400 per school. If this was equated across all English state schools the total value of school meal debt in England would stand at £28 million.</image:title>

The Right to Food is a legally recognised human right, first set out in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and later enshrined in the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - My Reflections on a Birkbeck Food Worker Health and Wellbeing Workshop - What moved me most was the participatory nature of the research. I felt that this wasn’t research happening about workers, but research happening with them. That distinction matters. I felt respected when lived experience was treated as knowledge. Too often, people’s stories are secondary to statistics. In this workshop, I felt that our voices were central.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Addressing the rising tide of food insecurity in the UK - Poverty and deprivation affect not only people but also the places where they live. It hollows out community resources such as the availability of healthy food, collective food knowledge, and social infrastructures that build resilience. People also become afraid to leave their homes, because of isolation and fear. This also impacts their ability to access good food because they avoid going out.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Piloting Ultra-Low Food Waste Zones: The Case of Somers Town in Camden, London - In our survey of 109 businesses and 30 VCS organisations, we found that Camden wastes a significant amount of food — 4400 litres per week. This could provide 45,000-113,000 meals annually valued at £65,000-£164,000. In environmental terms, this is equivalent to reducing car trips by 280,000-700,000km per year.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Piloting Ultra-Low Food Waste Zones: The Case of Somers Town in Camden, London - Four recommendations were produced as a result of findings of this research:</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Produce educational and promotional materials to improve senior staff's attitudes towards surplus food donation, focusing on the positive environmental and social outcomes. Where possible target non-donors with this material specifically. Provide a list of area-based VCS partners in need in food donations. 2. Facilitate regular local food collections from businesses similar to the City of Milan's Urban Food Policy Pact, Neighbourly, Fareshare Go local food redistribution schemes and the existing Lifeafterhummus food redistribution model. 3. Trial alternative methods of processing unavoidable food waste such as local composting: reduce carbon emissions from transportation, recover organic resources to restore soil fertility locally, introduce localised commercial composting options to businesses with a focus on those that place food waste in general waste. 4. Track progress - Implement an annual food waste survey for businesses in order to track how much food waste is produced, how this food waste is being managed, raise overall awareness and influence policy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Migrant Seasonal Workers Exploited While Supermarkets Profit - A new report has revealed the structural drivers of exploitation in the supply chain and migration system for migrant workers employed on large soft fruit farms. The Landworkers’ Alliance, in conjunction with the New Economics Foundation, Focus on Labour Exploitation, Sustain, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, and a network of former farmworkers, launched the report to show the extent of the exploitation and makes a series of demands for reform.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Migrant Seasonal Workers Exploited While Supermarkets Profit - How does big business profit?</image:title>
<image:caption>Our research demonstrates how this exploitation translated into monetary benefits for companies along the supply chain by using a case study from a farm in Kent. A worker picking soft fruit retains just below 8% of the total retail price of the produce. That means when you buy a £2.30 punnet of strawberries in the supermarket, the worker keeps 18p after costs, while the supermarket gets £1.26 of which 14p is profit, the farm gets 50p of which 5p is profit, and the packaging and distribution firm gets 10p. After the costs of travel and migration, food, subsistence, rent, and National Insurance, workers were left with just 7.6% to send home. The graphic below illustrates the findings and shows what workers earn per punnet of strawberries produced at this farm.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Join the movement for Free School Meals for All - In September, the National Education Union launched our campaign for Free School Meals for All, urging the Government to extend hot, healthy school dinners to every child in primary school in England. Since then, educators, doctors, dentists, parents, youth workers, faith leaders, councillors and more have banded together around this demand. All of us are united by the belief that no child in Britain should go hungry and every child should have the basics to learn and thrive.</image:title>
